First Baptist Church of Kingston (1840–Present)

Located at the corner of Johnson and Sydenham Streets, First Baptist Church of Kingston stands as a historic and enduring testimony to God’s faithfulness across generations. For over 185 years, this congregation has borne witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ within the city of Kingston and beyond.

The origins of the church date back to July 9, 1840, when a small assembly of believers first gathered for worship and the proclamation of the message of salvation in Christ. From these modest beginnings on Johnson Street—now the site of the Greek Orthodox Church—the congregation developed into a community marked by theological conviction, spiritual vitality, and missionary commitment.

The present church building, constructed of local Kingston limestone in the Romanesque Revival style and completed in 1913, reflects both architectural distinction and ecclesial continuity. Its cornerstone was laid on June 2 of that year by the Honourable John A. Boyd, then Chancellor of Ontario and a devoted Baptist layman, symbolizing the integration of faith and public life.

Throughout its history, the church has demonstrated resilience and steadfastness amid both seasons of growth and times of adversity. Notably, following the fire of 1966, the congregation undertook the work of rebuilding with renewed dedication, reaffirming its calling to serve as a visible and active witness to the Gospel.

The development and consolidation of the church’s ministry owe much to leaders such as Reverend Douglas Laing (pastor from 1889 to 1917), whose pastoral vision and perseverance were instrumental in establishing the congregation at its current location. Across subsequent decades, the church has maintained a consistent commitment to local outreach, global missions, and the cultivation of a diverse and welcoming community of faith.

Looking Forward with Gratitude and Hope

In reflecting upon its history, the church recognizes that its legacy is not confined to physical structures but is most profoundly expressed in lives transformed through the redemptive work of Christ. This historical continuity serves not merely as a record of the past, but as a theological foundation for present and future mission.

“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Guided by this enduring truth, First Baptist Church of Kingston remains committed to the faithful proclamation of the Gospel, the discipleship of believers, and the advancement of Christ’s mission in every generation.

“To God be the glory, great things He has done—and greater things He will yet do.”
